This morning, I’m ….

Jenna, as you can tell, did not care for the wheat stubble.

Five years ago today, we were cutting wheat in Limon. Today today, we are going to move pigs to the fairgrounds. My how times have changed.

Tara sent me a photo this morning of a 37 county Chevy and Wolf Pack trailer in the Trailing Edge campground at Limon. If this is you, hey, good morning. 👋 You’re temporarily neighbors with my family and some other wonderful harvesters.

Someone the other day shared a history article about Pat Garrett, the New Mexico sheriff who was the eventual killer of Billy the Kid. This has been several days ago (according to my history, in fact, a week ago yesterday), and yet I cannot get the “Blood Money” song out of my head. It ranks maybe first among earworms for me.

Some years ago at a MOPS meeting at Hope, we watched a video of Andy Crouch on technology. At that time I searched him and listened to all the podcasts I could find with him as a guest. I think there were three. He came to mind yesterday after yet another round of “no, you do not need to watch TV all the time every day” and his podcast presence has simply exploded. I’m not sad.

Andy is, incidentally, on a sabbatical. He takes one every seven years as part of his commitment to rest and he uses more or less a biblical schedule. This is aspirational for me. The particular schedule is not important.

Things on my list of about 20 things to do before we go to the fairgrounds today include photo data tags, two separate batches of dough, mow and sweep the floor. Things that were not on the list included a haircut for Jeremy, make chili for dinner, type this post and plan to attend a very rapid, very highly scheduled trip to Holdrege this morning. So far I am mainly just adding things to my list, but the floor is swept. Ha.

What is the fair mom’s version of a Caboodle? I need one of those.

Please attend your nearest county fair.

  1. Mike thinks this is brilliant. We read it (& laughed and sighed) somewhere 2.5 hours north of London. “Brilliant!” as the Brits say. We plan to go back to Scotland though; more our speed. Life is more simple and straightforward and nice. Thanks for sharing.
